Discover the main evidences left by Bahmani sultans in central India that reigned in the late Middle Ages. Amaze at the caves of Ajanta and Ellora, the Chalukya architectural gems, the extraordinary ruins of Vijayanagar and the great churches of Old Goa.


Tour Itinerary

Day 01

USA - MUMBAI
Arrival at Mumbai, meeting with a representative of Surya Reisedienst and transfer to hotel. Overnight.

Day 02

MUMBAI - AURANGABAD – ELLORA (MARTEDÌ CHIUSO)

Early morning flight to Aurangabad. The town is located about 30km from the Ellora Caves, a World Heritage Site. It is an archaeological site made of 34 caves excavated out of the hills and consecrated to hindu, jain and Buddhist divinities (from VII to XII century). The unrivaled masterpiece of Ellora is the stunning Kailasa temple, carved out of one single stone: the biggest carved monolith in the world. Dinner and overnight.

Day 03

AURANGABAD – AJANTA (closed on Mondays)(200KM – 4H) - HYDERABAD

Early morning drive (100km – 2h) to the Ajanta caves, to visit the place within the morning silence and peace, before the arrival of too many visitors. The 29 Ajanta caves date from the 2nd century BC to the 6th century AD and are excavated out of the vertical face of a horseshoe-shaped gorge dominating the Waghore river. The main interest in visiting this site, besides the suggestion of the place, are the frescoes, which are perfectly preserved and represent a unique sample of such ancient indian paintings. Return to Aurangabad and visit the BiBi Ka Maqbara, a mausoleum also known as the Taj Mahal of Deccan. Transfer to airport for the short flight to Hyderabad. On arrival accommodation at hotel, dinner and overnight.

Day 04

HYDERABAD – esc. a GOLCONDA
Visit at Golconda fortress, situated on a hill about 10km from Hyderabad. The extensive ruins witness the past grandeur. Once back to Hyderabad visit the Charminar (4 minarets) symbol of the city, great Mecca Masjid (which can contain up to 10,000members) and, in the twilight, the white Birla Mandir, which dominates the city. Dinner and overnight.

Day 05

HYDERABAD – BIDAR – GULBARGA (250km – 4h)

Departure toward Bidar, former capital of the Bahmani Sultanate. Today is a quiet town, but there are many reminiscences of the past like its great medieval fort and imposing and picturesque ruins of its mausoleums. Nearby will also visit Gurudwara Guru Nanak Jhira, an important Sikh shrine. Proceed to Gulbarga, dinner and overnight.

Day 06

GULBARGA – BIJAPUR (160km – 3h)

Although it was the first capital of the Bahmani sultans, Gulbarga has monuments of lesser importance than in Bijapur, nevertheless it is interesting to visit the Dargah (mausoleum) and the madrasa. A visit to the Jama Masjid (Friday Mosque) inside its ruined fort will complete the visit. After we will head toward Bijapur famed for its architecture. We will visit the imposing mausoleum of Gol Gumbaz, whose dome with a 38m of diameter, is one of the largest in the world and has got amazing sound effects. The Ibrahim Rauza, the other important mausoleum in the city, opposed to the large size of the Gol Gumbaz, slender and elegant shapes and sublime architectural finesse. Dinner and overnight.

Day 07

BIJAPUR – AIHOLE – PATTADAKAL – BADAMI (150km – 3h)

Transfer to Badami, with stops along the way to visit the complex of temples at Aihole and Pattadakal, which provide significant examples of the art of Chalukya dynasty (VI-XII c.). Upon arrival at Badami, accommodation at hotel, dinner and overnight.

Day 08

BADAMI – HAMPI – (150km – 3h)

Badami Chalukya dynasty's capital is now a quiet town that overlooks an artificial lake (Agastyathirka tank), bounded on either side by two formations of red sandstone. The city is famous for its cave temples of sublime workmanship and is pleasant to walk along the ghats of the reservoir and observe every day life. After the visit we will proceed to Hampi. Dinner and overnight.

Day 09

HAMPI (VIJAYANAGAR)

Near the town of Hampi lies the remains of one of the most and powerful capital of medieval India: the "City of Victory", Vijayanagar. The place is one of the most extraordinary of all India: the temples and the ruins cover an area of about 25km2 in a strange landscape made of rounded basalt boulders, spotted by low vegetation and bordered by the meandering course of a river. The place is incredible and the temples, still in good condition, and the people you meet along the visit, made of Vijayanagar, a real open air museum. Dinner and overnight.

Day 10

HAMPI – OLD GOA – CAVELOSSIM (305km 6h)

Departure toward the state of Goa with the visit of Old Goa, the city that served as a capital under Portuguese rule and then abandoned for the continuing outbreaks of malaria and cholera. As a witness to the glorious past remain today three big churches and the Basilica of Bom Jesus, where are buried the remains of the missionary St. Francis Xavier. The site was declared a World Heritage Site. We will proceed to the south of the state until the village of Cavelossim, facing the ocean. Dinner and overnight.

Day 11

CAVELOSSIM

Cavelossim is located in the south part of Goa state. It’s a beautiful 10km long pristine white sand beach, ideal for walks and relax. The beach in this area are much cleaner and quieter compared to that in the north of Goa; there’s also the chance to practicing wind surfing, jet skiing and adventure water sports not far away. Dinner and overnight.

CAVELOSSIM

Relax by the sea. Dinner and overnight.

Day 13

CAVELOSSIM – MUMBAI

Early morning flight to Mumbai. Day use accomodation at hotel near the airport and city visit that include: some of the most picturesque colonial buildings like the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (Victoria Terminus), the Crawford market, the High Court University of Mumbai, the Taj Mahal Palace hotel and the Gate of India.

Day 14

MUMBAI – USA

Transfer to Mumbai airport in time to board the return flight to Italy.
