A little outside of the usual tourist trails, a trip in Gujarat give the opportunity to discover a fascinating mosaic of ethnic groups, still a genuine human environment and, as a plus, the wonderful architecture of religious buildings. Starting from romantic Udaipur, in Rajasthan, climbing up the Aravalli hills to reach the incredible carved jain temples of Mount Abu, discovering the step well of Patan and the Modhera’s Sun temple, wandering between the mosques of Ahmedabad and climbing the incredible fortified temple hill of Palitana to relax, finally, on the sea shore facing the white Portuguese churches in the small and peaceful island of Diu.

Tour Itinerary

Day 01

Arrival at Delhi and meeting with a representative of Surya Reisedienst and transfer to hotel. Overnight.

Day 02

MUMBAI – UDAIPUR flight 11:10 - 12:15 BOM-UDRLMMGVSD Air India 472

City Palace - UdaipurMorning transfer to airport for the flight to Udaipur. On arrival, accommodation at the hotel and visit the City Palace, Jagdish temple and the Jag Mandir, reached by a boat excursion on Lake Pichola. Dinner and overnight.

Day 03

UDAIPUR – MOUNT ABU (165km – 3,5h)

The day will start climbing the verdant slopes of the Aravalli hills covered with pine trees until reaching the coolness of the only hill station of Rajasthan, Mount Abu, huddled around the Nakki lake, which, besides offering a pleasant climate, is a popular pilgrimage center for Hindus and Jain and reveals the wonder of chisels marble temples of Dilwara (XI-XIII century), one of the most beautiful in India. Dinner and overnight.

Day 04

MOUNT ABU – Ambaji – IDAR – POSHINA (137km – 3h)
Depart from Rajasthan state to enter the tribal region of Gujarat through the Aravalli hills. The day will purpose the crossing and stop in some villages of ethnic groups of Bhil and Garasia until reaching Poshina, whose bazaar hosts several workshops, renowned for the manufacture of silver tribal jewelery, daggers from sheaths and jars and pottery work. Dinner and overnight.

Day 05


The first aim of the day is in the village of Patan, where you will visit one of the most extraordinary stepwell in India. The giant Rani-ki-vav (Queen step well) dating from the eleventh century. Like other such wells in western India, it was a real meeting place where women collect the water for the house and the men sought a shelter from the heat of the day. This place is part of the UNESCO list of World Heritage Tentative list. In Patan you will also visit one of the last laboratories of patola, an intricate form of weaving of double-dyed (ikat) so difficult and challenging to take up to six months to complete a single sari. Not far away another marvel: the Sun Temple of Modhera, dating from the eleventh century and also built by the Solanki dynasty. In late afternoon we reach Dasada, where we spend the night in an EcoResort on the edge of the Little Rann of Kutch. Dinner and overnight.

Day 06

DASADA – HODKA (350km – 6h)

The entire day will be dedicated to the crossing of the Little Rann of Kutch, a particular ecosystem of salt marshes and inhospitable land but very rich in biodiversity, that hosts a varied fauna of migratory birds, flamingos, pelicans, gazelles and is also a shelter of the last indian donkey (khur). Along the way you can observe the local tribes (Kholi) working at salt mine. Through these lands move the Rabari, in constant search of better grazing grounds for their camels and sheep. Other tribes were stationed here including the Banjara, who live by farming and whose women are famous for their embroidery. Upon arrival at Hodka accommodation in a tented camp, an authentic and fascinating refuge carefully managed by the local community. This is the ideal door to the rich and varied heritage of the Kutch’s region. Dinner and overnight.

Day 07


Meghwal, Jat, Mutwa, Ahir, Rabari: these are just some of the patchwork of tribes that you may encounter during the tour of today and tomorrow, through the arid and inhospitable landscapes that is the Great Rann of Kutch. Full board.

Day 08

HODKA – BHUJ (70km 1,5h)– night train to AHMEDABAD (BHUJ BDTS EXP. 22:15-05:05)

After the visit of other tribal communities we will reach Bhuj in the early afternoon where we will visit the palaces of Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal. A stroll in the bazaars will conclude the visit at Bhuj, where we will have a room at disposal in hotel and we will have dinner before the transfer to railway station to board the overnight train to Ahmedabad.

Day 09

AHMEDABAD (Calico museum closed on Wednesdays)

Upon arrival at Ahmedabad, hotel accommodation and city tour to visit some of the beautiful mosques of the city such as the Jama Masjid, one of the most beautiful in India, and the Siddi Sayid and Ahmed Shah. We will also visit the Calico Textile Museum, one of the most important in the world in its kind, that has an incredible collection of ancient Indian fabrics. Dinner and overnight.

Day 10


Transfer towards Palitana with a stop at Bhavnagar, to visit the temple of Takhteshwar, from which you will enjoy extensive views of the Gulf of Cambay. Proceed to Palitana and accommodation at hotel where it will be possible to relax in a peaceful countryside setting. Dinner and overnight.

Day 11


Early morning departure to the discovery of one of the most spectacular sacred places to the whole Jainism India: Shatrunjaya hill; to attain it must climb about 3300 steps (sedan chairs are available). The top of the hill is home of two fortified complexes each containing a main temple and hundreds of smaller temples around. The fine decoration of the chisel stone, the continuous faithful influx, the religious atmosphere, to the unique location of this place made of Palitana a unique and unforgettable destination. After descending we will continue our journey towards the island of Diu, once a Portuguese colony, situated in the extreme south of Gujarat. Dinner and overnight.

Day 12


It 'easy to appreciate the quiet decadent atmosphere of Diu while strolling through the colorful streets, visiting the great beamingly churches, the grandeur of his fort and relaxing along the beaches. These are the activities to do in a place that still seems out of time. Dinner and overnight.

Day 13


Relax at the beach, walks or bicycle ride. Dinner and overnight.

Day 14

DIU – MUMBAI Flight 08:55 10:00 DIU-BOM Jet Airways 2500 not operated on SATURDAYS

Transfer to airport for flight to Mumbai. Accommodation in hotel near the airport with a room service as "day use" and visit some of the most picturesque colonial buildings of the city such as the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (Victoria Terminus), Crawford Market, University of Mumbai High Court, the Taj Mahal Palace hotel and the Gate of India. Transfer to airport in time for checking-in the flight to Italy.

Day 15


Departure from Mumbai in the night and arrival in usa early in the morning.
